Toda una leyenda del Soul, Al Green nació en Forrest City, Arkansas, en 1946, y empezó a actuar a los 9 años como integrante del grupo de gospel de su padre: "The Green Brothers". A lo largo de la década de los 50, el cuarteto hizo giras por todo el Sur, sin embargo, la familia Green se trasladó más tarde a Grand Rapids, en Michigan, y Al Green formó un nuevo grupo de Rhythm and Blues: "Al Green and the Creations", que se convirtió en "Soul Mates"; en 1968, el grupo logró llegar a los R & B Top 5 con "Back Up Train".
En 1969, Green empezó su carrera en solitario colaborando estrechamente con el productor Willie Mitchell, lanzando al año siguiente su primer álbum: "Green is Blues". Su siguiente álbum de 1970 fue "Al Green Gets Next to You", que fue disco de oro gracias al gran éxito "Tired of Being Alone". En 1972, "Let's Stay Together" alcanzó los Top 10 cuando el tema que da título al álbum devino número 1. Otro disco de 1972: "I'm Still in Love With You", alcanzó la cuarta posición, en tanto que "Call Me", aparecido en 1973, logró incluir tres canciones en los Top 10: "Her I Am"; "Call Me"; y "Sha-La-La (Make Me Happy)". Al Green es en la actualidad una superestrella del R & B, famoso por su voz conmovedora, sus interesantes arreglos musicales y enérgicos shows en directo.
Tras la trágica muerte de su novia, Mary Woodson, acaecida en 1974, Green se sintió atraído por la llamada de Dios y se hizo predicador en el Full Gospel Tabernacle de Memphis, donde aún predica hoy en día. Grabó varios álbumes de gospel a lo largo de los setenta y primeros ochenta, para regresar a su línea a últimos de los ochenta con "Put a Little Love in Your Heart", junto a Annie Lennox, y con un dueto junto a Al B. Sure del tema "As Long as We're Together", que estuvo en los R&B Top 40.
En 1995, el regreso de Green se consolidó con el lanzamiento de "Your Heart's in Good Hands". Aquel mismo año, se le incluyó en el Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, un honor merecido con creces.
