Merle Haggard es uno de los cantantes de country más influyentes desde Hank Williams. Su carrera comenzó cuando se coló en los camerinos de la leyenda del country Lefty Frizzell cuando era adolescente. Impresionado por sus canciones, Frizzell se negó a volver al escenario hasta que Haggard cantara una canción – a un público que tuvo una cálida acogida. Junto a Buck Owens y Wynn Stewart, fue un pionero de la escena country de Bakersfield en los 60, una leyenda de clase trabajadora que cantaba letras rotas. El estilo de Haggard estaba muy influído por el fraseo de Stewart, y su música es una mezcla de blues, jazz, folk y swing.
