Una de las grandes figuras del soul en toda su historia. De interpretación imperativa y pasional, Wilson Pickett es paradigma del Southern Soul y del mítico sello Stax, logrando un enorme éxito con sus fibrosas y carismáticas ejecuciones y éxitos-himnos inmortales como “In the midnight hour”, co-escrito junto a su amigo y excelente instrumentista, Steve Cropper, o “Land of 1000 Dances”, tema del gran Fats Domino.

Wilson Pickett nació el 18 de marzo de 1941 en Prattville, una localidad de Alabama (Estados Unidos).

Desde su niñez aprovechaba para cantar en todo tipo de contexto, ya fuesen iglesias, reuniones familiares o en las propias calles de Detroit, ciudad a la que se había trasladado en su adolescencia.

Comenzó su carrera profesional a finales de los 50 con el grupo de gospel The Violinaires, pasando después, en 1959, a ejercer como vocalista en The Falcons, consiguiendo el éxito con “I found a love” (número 6 en 1962). En The Falcons también se encontraba otros de los nombres importantes del soul, Eddie Floyd y Sir Mack Rice, tíos pioneros con una actitud musical y personal que pateaba el culo a cualquier fantoche contemporáneo.

En 1962, y acompañado por las Supremes, Wilson Pickett también grabó algunas canciones en solitario, como “Let me be your boy”, aparecida en el sello Correct-Tone. También grabó con Lloyd Price varios temas, como “If you need me” o “It’s too late”.

Al año siguiente pasó por los Spirituals antes de que en 1964 logró fichar por Atlantic, grabando en Stax sus mejores temas.

Debutó en Atlantic con “I’m gonna cry”, pero lograría el éxito con su tercer single, “In the midnight hour”, canción, conceptuada simplemente para el baile y compuesta por Wilson junto al guitarrista Cropper bajo producción de Jerry Wexler, se convirtió en un gigantesco triunfo comercial, en donde la fuerza vocal de Pickett e instrumental de los músicos participantes brillaban en su esplendor.

Posteriormente, durante toda la década de los 60, vendría más temas memorables y vibrantes como “634-5789”, compuesta entre Eddie Floyd y Steve Cropper, la citada “Land of 1000 Dances”, “Mustang Sally”, escrita por Sir Mack Rice, o “Funky Broadway”, estupenda revisitación del tema de los Dyke & The Blazers.

Incluso Pickett se marcó una espléndida y sudorosa versión del “Hey Jude” de los Beatles y logró un éxito con un cover del clásico de los Archies “Sugar Sugar”.

Al margen de ello, también grabó con Kenny Gamble y Leon Huff, en temas como “Engine number 9”, o Bobby Womack, con “I’m in love” o “I’m a midnight mover”.

A comienzos de los 70 su ristra de éxitos comerciales comenzó a disminuir, hecho que le confinó principalmente a sus enérgicas interpretaciones encima de los escenarios y a grabar en su propio sello, Wicked Label.

En el año 1991 ingresó en el Rock and Roll Hall of Fame
